What is HEIC?
HEIC (also called HEIF) is the format iPhones use by default. It stores photos in about half the size of a JPG, but many Windows apps, websites and forms cannot open it. Converting to JPG makes your pictures work everywhere.
How the conversion works
The first time you add a HEIC photo, a decoder is downloaded to your browser (a few megabytes, once). After that the photo is decoded and saved as JPG, PNG or WebP entirely on your device. This is why your photos remain private, and why it works even for many files at once.
Quality and file size
JPG at 92% looks the same as the original for almost every use. Choose PNG when you need lossless output, keeping in mind that files will be larger. The photo’s orientation is preserved, so portraits stay upright.
Tips for iPhone users
- To avoid converting in future, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”.
- Live Photos convert as a single still image.
- If a file fails, export it from the Photos app as JPG and try again.
- Remove location data afterwards with Remove EXIF.
