How the GIF is built
Each picture becomes one frame. Frames are fitted to the width you choose, using the first picture’s shape, then converted to a GIF palette of up to 256 colors. Everything runs in your browser, which is why creating a GIF stays private and quick.
Speed, size and colors
- Time per frame: 100–200 ms feels like motion; 500 ms or more works for slideshows.
- Width: 400–600 px is plenty for chats and social media and keeps files small.
- Colors: fewer colors mean smaller files but more banding. 256 looks best for photos.
Keep the file size under control
GIF is an old format and gets big quickly. Use fewer frames, a smaller width and fewer colors. Resize your pictures first with Resize Image if they are very large.
